PKU1: Population Aging and Health

Hosted by Peking University
8 July – 2 August 2013

The demographic transition which is characterized by declined fertility and mortality, leading to population aging has changed the age structure of the population all over the world as well as the world itself. It seems that the world is changing and has to be changed correspondingly with the dramatic change of age structure of its population, especially from the perspective of health. The course will highlight the main characteristics of population aging and its impact on population health as well as methods of research.

  • Population aging: An interdisciplinary research
  • Trends of population aging in the world
  • Population aging and health
  • Population aging and disease burden
  • Life expectancy and health life expectancy
  • Spatial analysis on aging and disability
  • Population aging under rrbanization in China
  • Chinese traditional culture and family support to elderly
  • Aging technology and industrial

Field Trip

There will be a visit to nursing homes in Beijing.

Target Audience

Subject areas: population studies, sociology, economics, health science, management, geography, anthropology etc.

Prerequisite: Second year undergraduate or above (with a completion of first year units in one or more of the subject areas).

Learning outcomes & assessment

Learning outcomes

Understand the main characteristics of population aging, its impact on population health and learn the methods of research on aging and health.

32 contact hours; attracts 2 equivalent credits in Peking University

Assessment

There will be no exams but a term paper will be required to get the credit.

Two bedroom suite, shared bathroom, laundry available, meals excluded, 100RMB/night/person

Students must arrive by July 7, 2013

FAQ

  1. Can I participate in more than one GSP course at your university concurrently?
    Yes, students can take both PKU1 (Population Aging and Health) and PKU2 (Communication, Culture, and Society: The Chinese Way).
  2. If I am accepted, when will I receive more course details, such as course content, reading lists, timetables, payment schedule & cancellation policies, campus maps and other logistics details?
    These will be available by the end of May 2013.
  3. Will I have access to student facilities such as computer labs, libraries and health services at the hosting university?
    The students can access common student facilities such as computer labs and libraries with an ID card. For health services, students are required to buy their own health insurance before coming to Peking University.
  4. Will I need a visa to attend this GSP course?
    Yes, a valid visa is required to attend the GSP courses at Peking University. Please refer to the local Chinese embassy/consulate for details. The host GSP coordinator can provide supporting letters and other relevant information for your visa application.
  5. How can we interact with other participants and GSP alumni before the course?
    Please visit our GSP Facebook page and join the various events groups to meet informally with other GSP participants as well as alumni. Your may also post questions to course coordinators on the FB Wall.

Students are also eligible to enrol in a supplementary Chinese Language course. The cost of the course is covered by the tuition fee.

It offers 1.5 PKU credit, 24 credit hours (2 hours X 3 days per week), on learning the basic Chinese on survival levels, including listening, speaking and writing Chinese characters.

Proficiency test will be given on the first day of the program to determine the level of applicants, and to divide them to small classes.

Examination is held in the last class, and the score is included in the official PKU transcript.
