UCT2 - Afropolitanism, Social Justice and Social Entrepreneurship

Designed to inspire students to be global citizens, this course presents comprehensive insights into South African history, politics, culture, social justice and social entrepreneurship. The course connects the past to the present, discussing opportunities and challenges of transformation facing the country, the African continent and the world today. Through engagement and immersion in the local Cape Town context, students will reflect on values of social justice and responsibility, gaining insights into the interconnectivity between their own societies and the rest of the world. Visits to historical, heritage and entrepreneurial community sites will allow students to experience the vibrant and diverse cultures that influence and shape the character of Cape Town and South Africa, as well as expose students to innovative initiatives communities are undertaking to seek solutions to social issues.

Bachelor students from 2nd year, Master students, and PhD students

Further specifications: This is a multi-level course accessible to undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in learning about the political history, contemporary culture, social entrepreneurship and social justice initiatives in Cape Town and South Africa

Prerequisites

The course is open to students from diverse educational backgrounds, however students should have an interest in the following disciplines: History, Political Science, Sociology, Development

Delivery Method & Learning Outcomes

The course will be delivered in the format of 12 3-hour interactive lectures, documentary screenings followed by discussion, and excursions. After the course, students should be able to gain an understanding of:

• The significant social and political processes that have shaped the making of modern South African politics and society
• The central political questions facing post-apartheid South African society

Assessment:

Students will be assessed according to 4 criteria:

1. class participation
2. group discussions
3. an essay
4. a presentation

Credit equivalent at host university & contact hours

6 USA or 12 ECTS credits

Equates to 180 learning hours:

• 60 hours class time,
• 42 hours on field trip site visits and excursions
• 78 hours for self-study

The course will be delivered over a 20-day period (Monday through Friday week) with free weekends on Saturday and Sunday. The morning sessions will mostly be class-time, with field trip excursions scheduled for the afternoon sessions.

Accommodation

• Students must arrive by: 17 June, the Sunday prior to the start of the programme.
• Students will be able to check in from 2 p.m.
• Check-out date: 14 July, the Saturday after the end of the programme

Students have the option to stay longer, at their own cost, and provided the accommodation facility is alerted in good time to ensure availability of rooms.

Required and / or Recommended Insurance(s)

All students must secure a comprehensive insurance policy from their home country, covering all aspects of their visit to RSA (including travel insurance, medical care, accident & emergency cover, repatriation etc.).  Students must ensure that they meet the relevant visa requirements to enter South Africa.
