PKU2 - The Rise of China and Change in the World Politics

2 July 2017 – 27 July 2017
Hosted by Peking University

This seminar course is intended for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students to examine major issues and topics concerning the rise of China from a broad theoretical perspective, and to engage in the academic discourse and policy debate about implications of China’s rise for world politics.

The seminar is organized around the central question – will China’s rise bring about a fundamental change to the international system?

The course is roughly divided into three sections:

  1. China’s rise and the paradigm change in world politics;
  2. China’s quest for identity and order; and
  3. challenges and implications of China rising for Asia and the world.

Under each of these sections, a few specific topics are identified for class discussion.

  • Accommodation

    RMB 140 yuan per day, plus RMB 500 yuan as deposit.
    All accommodation fee need to be paid when check in.

    Depending on specific courses (refer to course syllabus)
  • Living Expenses

    RMB 50-100 per day
  • Visa Fee

    Please refer to local Chinese Consulate website.

Field Trip

Two field trips: (1) The National Museum of History; (2) The Marco Polo Bridge and the Museum of the Second Sino-Japanese War (subject to change if the museum schedule changes)

  • Bachelor students
  • Master students
  • PhD students (PhD students need to consult with instructor about the appropriateness of this course for their research interests)

Prerequisites

Students wishing to enroll in this course are expected to have basic knowledge of international relations and China’s foreign policy.

Delivery Method & Learning Outcomes

The course is organized as a seminar. The proceeding of the course will be based on instructor’s overview of specific issues for each session and students’ presentation of the required texts related to the general themes and specific topics, followed by class/group discussion.

The successful students will have demonstrated the ability to analyze the nuances and implications of China’s ascent on the world stage from a broad historical and theoretical perspective.

Attendance 20%;
Participation 15%;
Presentation 15%;
Quizzes 20%;
Essays 30%

Credits at host university: 3 credits
40 total contact hours in classroom + 8 field trip hours (excluding self-study hours)

Accommodation

Students must arrive by 1 July 2018
Students will be able to check in from 30 June 2018
Check-out date 28 July 2018

Students must check out no later than July 29.
