UCB1 - Environmental Leadership Program

The Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) of the College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley provides state-of-the-art training in environmental and natural resource science, policy, and leadership to strengthen the capacities of global environmental practitioners. Participants will benefit from a unique opportunity to interact with Berkeley faculty as well as their global peers to access new information and tools, share practical experiences, and develop collaborative leadership skills. As of 2017, the Beahrs ELP has graduated 640 environmental leaders from over 110 countries.

The 3-week certificate course on Sustainable Environmental Management offers a series of interdisciplinary workshops, facilitated by UC Berkeley faculty and non-academic experts from the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Program curriculum includes:

• Mitigation of and Adaptation to Climate Change
• Leadership for Collaborative Change
• Impact Assessment
• Corporate Social Responsibility
• Policies for Sustainable Development
• Population and Health
• Food, Agroecology, and Biotechnology

Field Trip

The curriculum is enhanced by field trips that showcase California’s groundbreaking responses to diverse agricultural, natural resource, and urban environmental challenges. Tentative field trips include:

• Tour of San Francisco;
• Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area (“green urban planning/economy, renewable energy, sustainable water and waste management, environmental and food justice);
• Muir Woods and Point Reyes (coastal conservation);
• Central Coast (intensive horticulture and coastal conservation);
• Silicon Valley

Target Audience

Advanced undergraduates (graduating seniors) and graduate students (MA and PhD).

Further specifications:

Students interested in networking with international environmental practitioners, are in the process and/or are interested in becoming environmental leaders, and have an interest in environmental economics, science, policy, and management.

Prerequisites

• Proficiency in English to allow full participation in course discussions;
• A resumé that demonstrates strong professional experience and leadership potential;
• Affiliation with an institution concerned with environmental management/sustainable development.

Delivery Method & Learning Outcomes

Training methods include lectures, thematic groups, role play simulations, debates, participant case studies, panels, and presentations.

Assessment

Group exercises, participation, attendance, and written assignments.

Credit equivalent at host university & contact hours

Students participating in this course will not receive Berkeley academic credit. Students will receive a certificate in Sustainable Environmental Management from UC Berkeley’s College of Natural Resources. It is at the discretion of participant’s home university to accept course evaluation and final grade as transfer credit.

Approximately 144 total contact hours (classroom) + 36 field trip hours (excluding self-study hours)

Accommodation

The Foothill Residence Hall, at the northeast corner of the UC Berkeley campus, offers simple, modern, clean dormitory rooms surrounded by trees and overlooking spectacular views of the Bay Area. Bath and common living areas are shared with participants of the same gender. A self-service computer center, dining facilities, laundry, and other amenities are on site. Classrooms, shops, restaurants and public transportation are nearby.

Cost is included in tuition fees.

Students must arrive by 5 July 2018.
Students will be able to check in from 4 July 2018.
Check-out date: 28 July 2018

Students will not have the option to stay longer. 

Required and/or Recommended Insurance

International students who come to UC Berkeley to take classes in Summer Sessions are required to have health insurance coverage during the entire length of enrollment. Students should purchase a health insurance policy before arrival in Berkeley. This policy should cover all medical and hospital costs or provide a minimum of:

• $50,000 (U.S.D.) for each accident or illness
• a deductible of $500 or less for each accident or illness
• at least 75% of hospital and physician costs from the time you leave your current residence to the day you plan to return.
• coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains

Students must be sure to bring a full description of the health benefits and an identification card giving the period of validity.
