TOK4 - Nanoscience

This lecture series provides a general overview of nanoscience, which has grown very rapidly in the last few years.

Study Visit to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)

Planned Course Schedule

Part I: Biotechnology
This sub-section focuses on advanced biomedical science and technology bound to the drug discovery

Schedule:

  1. The proteasome: destruction for life
  2. GTP-binding proteins involved in intracellular signal transduction
  3. NMR in biological systems
  4. From Catalysis to Life Science
  5. Lab Tour

Part II: Biomedicine and Nanobiotechnology
This sub-section focuses on the understanding of the structure and functions of the living systems at the nano level as a basis for the development of bioinspired structures and functions as well as for the establishment of methodologies to integrate living components, including biomolecules and cells, into nanodevices while regulating their functions.

To effectively achieve this goal, the section sets 4 topics:

  • Mechano-bioengineering;
  • Biodevice Technology;
  • Nanotechnology and Materials Science for Nanoscale Cell Therapy and
    Nano Bioelectronics.

Part III: Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology: This sub-section covers fundamentals and applications of nanotechnology mainly established in a field of semiconductors, including the following four topics:

  • Nanostructures for advanced photonics;
  • Silicon-based integrated nanoelectronics;
  • Physics and technology of semiconductor nanostructures, and
    Spintronics: fundamentals and applications.

  4. Spintronics: fundamentals and applications
  5. Lab Tour

Field Trip

 A one-day field trip related to the lectures (“Study Visit”) will be organized for IARU GSP students as part of the course.

Also, a one-day trip with students of other IARU GSP TOK courses will be scheduled out of the course.

Target Audience/ Prerequisites

Bachelor students, Master students and PhD students.

 Undergraduate or graduate students in any field are welcome.

Learning Outcomes

 The lecture series provides a general overview of nanoscience, which has grown very rapidly in the last few years.

Assessment

Assessment will be made in consideration of attendance frequency and several short essays on the subjects chosen from each sub-section of Nanoscience lectures (one from Biotechnology, one from Biomedicine and Nanobiotechnology, and one from Nanotechnology) submitted no later than the designated date.

Attendance is mandatory and the scores will be given according to the essays.

Credit equivalent at host university & Contact hours

1.5 credits
Approx. 21 total contact hours (105 minutes x 12 classrooms) +1 study visit hours + 6 lab tours (excluding self-study hours).

The courses of "Biotechnology", "Biomedicine and Nanobiotechnology" and "Nanotechnology" research comprise 4 lectures each and every lecture is 105 minutes in duration. A 1 hour laboratory tour will follow after every 2 lectures.

Another obligation is to write three essays with a few pages each.

Students must arrive by July 6.
Check-in is possible from July 6.
Check-out date July 21.

Students may be asked to stay one night on July 16 at a different hotel due to logistic reasons.
Students can extend their stay depending on room availability of the hotel.
